Empress of the Tang Dynasty
"Empress of the Tang Dynasty" is a large-scale Tang Palace dance and music performance with distinctive features in Xi'an Tang Palace Theatre. It premiered on July 9th, 2016. Comprising five acts and lasting for 60 minutes, it presents the historical story of Wu Zetian from being selected as a court lady into the palace at the age of 14 to ascending the throne and proclaiming herself empress at the age of 67, thus reproducing the vicissitudes of the Tang Dynasty from the Zhenguan period to the early Tianshou period.
It retains the only live accompaniment by a classical orchestra in China and the solo performance of the Tang Dynasty pan flute on site. Advanced technologies such as the widest split-style celestial steps in China and numerically controlled stage machinery are adopted.
